The wager in the throne room and four messengers arriving before each other has finished speaking. Everything taken in a single afternoon, and a man who tears his robe and worships anyway.
“He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh’s name.””— Job 1:21 (WEB)
There was a man... in the land of Uz...
Job 1:1 (NLT)There once was a man named Job who lived in the land of Uz.
And the Adversary... walked in among them.
Job 1:6 (NLT)One day the members of the heavenly court came to present themselves before the LORD, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them.
"From where do you come?"... the Great Voice spoke.
Job 1:7 (NLT)Where have you come from? the LORD asked Satan.
"From walking the earth"... through the fire and the smoke.
Job 1:7 (NLT)Satan answered the LORD, I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.
"Have you seen my servant?"... the Voice asked the Night.
Job 1:8 (NLT)Then the LORD asked Satan, Have you noticed my servant Job?
"Job... who walks... in the path of the right?"
Job 1:8 (NLT)He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity.
The Enemy laughed... a hollow, metallic sound...
Job 1:9 (NLT)Satan replied to the LORD, Yes, but Job has good reason to fear God.
"He only loves You... for the wall You put 'round."
Job 1:10 (NLT)You have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property.
PUT FORTH YOUR HAND! TOUCH THE EARTH AND THE SEED!
Job 1:11 (NLT)But reach out and take away everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face!
WATCH THE PURITY... TURN TO HUNGER AND NEED!
Job 1:11 (NLT)...he will surely curse you to your face!
NAKED I CAME... FROM THE MOTHER'S DARK ROOM!
Job 1:21 (NLT)I came naked from my mother’s womb...
NAKED I RETURN... TO THE SILENCE OF THE TOMB!
Job 1:21 (NLT)...and I will be naked when I leave.
The first runner came... "The oxen are gone."
Job 1:14-15 (NLT)...a messenger arrived at Job’s home with this news... the Sabeans raided us!
The second... "The fire... fell with the dawn."
Job 1:16 (NLT)While he was still speaking, another messenger arrived with this news: The fire of God has fallen from heaven...
The third... "The camels... stolen in the night."
Job 1:17 (NLT)While he was still speaking, a third messenger arrived with this news: Three bands of Chaldean raiders have stolen your camels...
Then the fourth... "The house... crushed the delight."
Job 1:18-19 (NLT)While he was still speaking, another messenger arrived with this news: Your sons and daughters were feasting... when suddenly a powerful wind swept in from the wilderness...
Job stood... in the center of the wreck.
Job 1:20 (NLT)Job stood up and tore his robe in grief.
The weight of the stars... on the back of his neck.
Job 1:20 (NLT)Job stood up and tore his robe in grief.
He tore his robe... he shaved his crown.
Job 1:20 (NLT)Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head...
Worshipped the One... as the world went down.
Job 1:20 (NLT)...and fell to the ground to worship.
Full passage — Job 1:1-22 WEB
- 1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God, and turned away from evil.
- 2There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
- 3His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.
- 4His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
- 5It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.
- 6Now on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before Yahweh, Satan also came among them.
- 7Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”
- 8Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.”
- 9Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?
- 10Haven’t you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
- 11But stretch out your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face.”
- 12Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don’t stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh.
- 13It fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
- 14that there came a messenger to Job, and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them,
- 15and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
- 16While he was still speaking, there also came another, and said, “The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
- 17While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
- 18While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
- 19and behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you.”
- 20Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped.
- 21He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh’s name.”
- 22In all this, Job did not sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.
The second round: skin for skin. Sores from sole to crown, a potsherd, ashes, and three friends who sit with him seven days without saying a word — the best thing they do.
“So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.”— Job 2:13 (WEB)
Again the Court met... on the edge of the sky.
Job 2:1 (NLT)One day the members of the heavenly court came again to present themselves before the LORD...
"He’s still upright," the Voice said... "and you know why."
Job 2:3 (NLT)Then the LORD asked Satan, Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth...
The Enemy hissed... "It’s just skin for skin...
Job 2:4 (NLT)Satan replied to the LORD, Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life.
But touch his own bone... and the curse will begin.
Job 2:5 (NLT)But reach out and take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!
Let the sickness... burn through the marrow and vein."
Job 2:5 (NLT)...take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!
The Voice said, "Go... but his life must remain."
Job 2:6 (NLT)All right, do with him as you please, the LORD said to Satan. But spare his life.
So Job sat down... in the gray of the pyre...
Job 2:8 (NLT)Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery as he sat among the ashes.
Scraping his skin... in the shadow of the fire.
Job 2:8 (NLT)Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery...
SHALL WE TAKE THE HARVEST! AND NOT TAKE THE RUST?
Job 2:10 (NLT)Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?
JOB SAT STILL! IN THE TURNING OF THE DUST!
Job 2:10 (NLT)So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.
IN ALL THIS PAIN! NOT A WORD WAS WRONG!
Job 2:10 (NLT)So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.
HE KEPT THE SILENCE... WHILE THE DARK WAS STRONG!
Job 2:10 (NLT)So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.
His woman looked down... at the wreck on the floor.
Job 2:9 (NLT)His wife said to him...
"Why hold your honor... when you have nothing more?
Job 2:9 (NLT)Are you still trying to maintain your integrity?
Curse the Great Name... and let the breath go."
Job 2:9 (NLT)Curse God and die.
He said, "You speak... like the foolish ones I know.
Job 2:10 (NLT)But Job replied, You talk like a foolish woman.
Shall we take the light... and not the heavy night?"
Job 2:10 (NLT)Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?
And he stayed in the gray... in the fading of the sight.
Job 2:10 (NLT)So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.
Three friends came... from the lands far away.
Job 2:11 (NLT)When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him.
To sit in the ash... where the broken man lay.
Job 2:12 (NLT)When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes...
They tore their robes... they threw dust in the air.
Job 2:12 (NLT)...and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief.
Seven days of silence... in the weight of despair.
Job 2:13 (NLT)Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job...
For the grief was too big... for a tongue to find the way.
Job 2:13 (NLT)...for they saw that his suffering was too great for words.

- 2Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”
- 3Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause.”
- 4Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Skin for skin. Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.
- 5But stretch out your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will renounce you to your face.”
- 6Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand. Only spare his life.”
- 7So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh, and struck Job with painful sores from the sole of his foot to his head.
- 8He took for himself a potsherd to scrape himself with, and he sat among the ashes.
- 9Then his wife said to him, “Do you still maintain your integrity? Renounce God, and die.”
- 10But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job didn’t sin with his lips.
- 11Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.
- 12When they lifted up their eyes from a distance, and didn’t recognize him, they raised their voices, and wept; and they each tore his robe, and sprinkled dust on their heads toward the sky.
- 13So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.
Job opens his mouth and curses the day he was born. Let that day be darkness; let God above not seek for it. The silence breaks and never re-forms.
“For the thing which I fear comes on me, That which I am afraid of comes to me.”— Job 3:25 (WEB)
Let the day perish... where I first drew my breath.
Job 3:3 (NLT)Let the day of my birth be erased, and the night I was conceived.
Let the darkness wrap it... in the garment of death.
Job 3:4-5 (NLT)Let that day be turned to darkness... Let the darkness and utter gloom claim that day for its own.
Don't let the stars of the twilight... show any glow.
Job 3:9 (NLT)Let its morning stars remain dark...
Don't let the dawn... ever start to flow.
Job 3:9 (NLT)Let it hope for light, but in vain; may it never see the morning light.
Because it didn't shut the doors... of the mother's room.
Job 3:10 (NLT)Curse that day for failing to shut my mother’s womb...
And hide the sorrow... from the quiet of the tomb.
Job 3:10 (NLT)...for letting me be born to see all this trouble.
THE THING I FEARED! HAS FALLEN ON MY HEAD!
Job 3:25 (NLT)What I always feared has happened to me. What I dreaded has come true.
THE THING I DREADED! IS THE DEEPNESS OF MY BED!
Job 3:25 (NLT)What I dreaded has come true.
I HAD NO EASE! I HAD NO REST IN MY MIND!
Job 3:26 (NLT)I have no peace, no quietness. I have no rest; only trouble comes.
BUT THE TROUBLE CAME! FOR THE MAN TO FIND!
Job 3:26 (NLT)I have no rest; only trouble comes.
Why is light given... to a man in his pain?
Job 3:20 (NLT)Oh, why give light to those in misery, and life to those who are bitter?
Who longs for the end... like the desert for the rain?
Job 3:21 (NLT)They long for death, and it won’t come. They search for it harder than for hidden treasure.
Who digs for the grave... more than hidden stone?
Job 3:21 (NLT)They search for it harder than for hidden treasure.
Who finds the joy... when the stone is his own?
Job 3:22 (NLT)They’re filled with joy when they finally die, and rejoice when they find the grave.
For my sighing comes... before I even eat.
Job 3:24 (NLT)I cannot eat for sighing...
And my roarings pour out... like the water at my feet.
Job 3:24 (NLT)...my groans pour out like water.
There the wicked... cease from their fire.
Job 3:17 (NLT)For in death the wicked cause no trouble...
There the weary... find the end of the wire.
Job 3:17 (NLT)...and the destitute are at rest.
The prisoners rest... in a world without sound.
Job 3:18 (NLT)Even captives are at ease in death...
They don't hear the master... walk upon the ground.
Job 3:18 (NLT)...with no guards to curse them.
The small and the great... they are both the same.
Job 3:19 (NLT)Rich and poor are both there...
The servant is free... from the burden and the name.
Job 3:19 (NLT)...and the slave is free from his master.

- 1After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed the day of his birth.
- 2Job answered:
- 3“Let the day perish in which I was born, the night which said, ‘There is a boy conceived.’
- 4Let that day be darkness. Don’t let God from above seek for it, neither let the light shine on it.
- 5Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let all that makes black the day terrify it.
- 6As for that night, let thick darkness seize on it. Let it not rejoice among the days of the year. Let it not come into the number of the months.
- 7Behold, let that night be barren. Let no joyful voice come therein.
- 8Let them curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up leviathan.
- 9Let the stars of its twilight be dark. Let it look for light, but have none, neither let it see the eyelids of the morning,
- 10because it didn’t shut up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor did it hide trouble from my eyes.
- 11“Why didn’t I die from the womb? Why didn’t I give up the spirit when my mother bore me?
- 12Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breast, that I should nurse?
- 13For now should I have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,
- 14with kings and counselors of the earth, who built up waste places for themselves;
- 15or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver:
- 16or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been, as infants who never saw light.
- 17There the wicked cease from troubling. There the weary are at rest.
- 18There the prisoners are at ease together. They don’t hear the voice of the taskmaster.
- 19The small and the great are there. The servant is free from his master.
- 20“Why is light given to him who is in misery, life to the bitter in soul,
- 21Who long for death, but it doesn’t come; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures,
- 22who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?
- 23Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?
- 24For my sighing comes before I eat. My groanings are poured out like water.
- 25For the thing which I fear comes on me, That which I am afraid of comes to me.
- 26I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest; but trouble comes.”
Eliphaz and the spirit that passed before his face, making the hair of his flesh stand up. Consolation delivered as a ghost story.
“‘Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?”— Job 4:17 (WEB)
"If a man tries a word... will you turn away?
Job 4:2 (NLT)Will you be patient and let me say a word?
But who can keep silent... with so much to say?
Job 4:2 (NLT)For who could keep from speaking out?
You’ve been the pillar... the one who held the weak.
Job 4:3-4 (NLT)In the past you have encouraged many people; you have strengthened those who were weak.
But now it hits your bone... and your heart is looking bleak.
Job 4:5 (NLT)But now when trouble strikes, you lose heart. You are terrified when it touches you.
Is not your fear of God... the anchor of your soul?
Job 4:6 (NLT)Doesn’t your reverence for God give you confidence?
Or is there a crack... in the middle of the bowl?"
Job 4:6 (NLT)Doesn’t your life of integrity give you hope?
"In the thoughts of the night... when the deep sleep falls.
Job 4:13 (NLT)This truth came to me in secret, as though whispered in my ear. It came to me in a disturbing vision at night...
A fear came over me... crawling up the walls.
Job 4:14 (NLT)Fear gripped me, and my bones trembled.
My bones began to shake... a spirit passed my sight.
Job 4:15 (NLT)A spirit swept past my face...
The hair on my skin... stood up in the fright.
Job 4:15 (NLT)...and my hair stood on end.
It stood still... but the face was a blur.
Job 4:16 (NLT)The spirit stopped, but I couldn’t see its shape clearly. There was a form before my eyes, and I heard a hushed voice:
In the silence of the room... I heard the shadow stir."
Job 4:16 (NLT)...and I heard a hushed voice:
CAN A MORTAL MAN! BE JUST BEFORE THE KING?
Job 4:17 (NLT)Can a mortal be innocent before God?
CAN A MAN BE CLEAN! UNDERNEATH THE WING?
Job 4:17 (NLT)Can anyone be pure before the Creator?
HE PUTS NO TRUST! IN THE SERVANTS OF THE SKY!
Job 4:18 (NLT)If God does not trust his own angels and has charged his messengers with foolishness...
HOW MUCH LESS IN THE CLAY! WHERE THE BROKEN ONES DIE!
Job 4:19 (NLT)...how much less will he trust people made of clay!
"They are crushed like the moth... between the dawn and the night.
Job 4:19-20 (NLT)They are made of dust, crushed as easily as a moth. They are alive in the morning but dead by evening...
They perish forever... out of the reach of the light.
Job 4:20 (NLT)...gone forever without a trace.
Does not their excellence... go away like the breath?
Job 4:21 (NLT)Their tent-cords are pulled and the tent collapses...
They die without wisdom... in the shadow of the death."
Job 4:21 (NLT)...and they die in ignorance.

- 1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,
- 2“If someone ventures to talk with you, will you be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?
- 3Behold, you have instructed many, you have strengthened the weak hands.
- 4Your words have supported him who was falling, You have made firm the feeble knees.
- 5But now it has come to you, and you faint. It touches you, and you are troubled.
- 6Isn’t your piety your confidence? Isn’t the integrity of your ways your hope?
- 7“Remember, now, whoever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?
- 8According to what I have seen, those who plow iniquity, and sow trouble, reap the same.
- 9By the breath of God they perish. By the blast of his anger are they consumed.
- 10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
- 11The old lion perishes for lack of prey. The cubs of the lioness are scattered abroad.
- 12“Now a thing was secretly brought to me. My ear received a whisper of it.
- 13In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
- 14fear came on me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake.
- 15Then a spirit passed before my face. The hair of my flesh stood up.
- 16It stood still, but I couldn’t discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes. Silence, then I heard a voice, saying,
- 17‘Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?
- 18Behold, he puts no trust in his servants. He charges his angels with error.
- 19How much more, those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth!
- 20Between morning and evening they are destroyed. They perish forever without any regarding it.
- 21Isn’t their tent cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.’
Man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward. Eliphaz recommending that Job commit his cause to God — sound advice, offered to the wrong man at the wrong time.
“but man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.”— Job 5:7 (WEB)
"Call out now... is there anyone to hear?
Job 5:1 (NLT)Cry for help, but will anyone answer you?
To which of the holy ones... will you turn your ear?
Job 5:1 (NLT)Which of the angels will help you?
For wrath kills the foolish man... and envy slays the weak.
Job 5:2 (NLT)Surely resentment destroys the fool, and jealousy kills the simple.
I have seen the foolish... taking the root they seek.
Job 5:3 (NLT)I have seen that fools may be successful for the moment...
But suddenly... I cursed his place of rest.
Job 5:3 (NLT)...but then comes sudden disaster.
His children are crushed... in the gate of the test."
Job 5:4 (NLT)Their children are abandoned far from help; they are crushed in court with no one to defend them.
FOR MAN IS BORN TO TROUBLE! AS THE SPARKS FLY HIGH!
Job 5:7 (NLT)People are born for trouble as readily as sparks fly up from a fire.
BORN TO THE SORROW! BENEATH THE HEAVY SKY!
Job 5:7 (NLT)People are born for trouble as readily as sparks fly up from a fire.
I WOULD SEEK UNTO GOD! I WOULD LEAVE IT IN HIS HAND!
Job 5:8 (NLT)If I were you, I would go to God and present my case to him.
THE ONE WHO DOES THE WONDERS! THAT NO MAN CAN UNDERSTAND!
Job 5:9 (NLT)He does great things too marvelous to understand. He performs countless miracles.
"He gives the rain... upon the face of the earth.
Job 5:10 (NLT)He gives rain for the earth and water for the fields.
He sets the lowly on high... and gives the mourning birth.
Job 5:11 (NLT)He gives prosperity to the poor and protects those who suffer.
He traps the wise... in their own clever net.
Job 5:13 (NLT)He traps the wise in their own cleverness so their cunning schemes are thwarted.
They meet with the darkness... before the sun has set.
Job 5:14 (NLT)They find it is dark in the daytime, and they grope at noon as if it were night.
But He saves the poor... from the edge of the sword.
Job 5:15 (NLT)He rescues the poor from the cutting words of the strong, and rescues them from the clutches of the powerful.
So the weak have hope... in the shadow of the Lord."
Job 5:16 (NLT)And so at last the poor have hope, and the snapping jaws of the wicked are shut.
"Behold... happy is the man... whom God corrects today.
Job 5:17 (NLT)But consider the joy of those corrected by God!
So don't despise the hand... that takes the breath away.
Job 5:17 (NLT)Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty when you sin.
For He makes the wound... and He binds it up tight.
Job 5:18 (NLT)For though he wounds, he also bandages.
He breaks the bone... but He makes the spirit right."
Job 5:18 (NLT)He strikes, but his hands also heal.

- 4His children are far from safety. They are crushed in the gate. Neither is there any to deliver them,

The poison drinks my spirit... and takes the heavy toll."
Job 6:4 (NLT)Their poison infects my spirit. God’s terrors are lined up against me.
OH THAT I MIGHT HAVE! THE THING THAT I REQUEST!
Job 6:8 (NLT)Oh, that I might have my request, that God would grant my desire.
THAT GOD WOULD GRANT ME! THE FINAL PLACE OF REST!
Job 6:8 (NLT)...that God would grant my desire.
THAT HE WOULD LET LOOSE! HIS HAND UPON THE THREAD!
Job 6:9 (NLT)I wish he would crush me. I wish he would reach out his hand and kill me.
AND CUT THE CORD! OF THE LIVING AND THE DEAD!
Job 6:9 (NLT)I wish he would reach out his hand and kill me.
"To him that is afflicted... pity should be shown.
Job 6:14 (NLT)One should be kind to a fainting friend, but you accuse me without the slightest fear of the Almighty.
But you, my brothers... have hearts of heavy stone.
Job 6:15 (NLT)My brothers, you have proved as unreliable as a seasonal brook...
You are like a brook... that vanishes in the heat.
Job 6:15-17 (NLT)...that overflows its banks in the spring... but fades away when the hot summer days arrive.
A stream that disappears... beneath the traveler's feet.
Job 6:17 (NLT)They disappear in the heat.
You see my casting down... and you are afraid.
Job 6:21 (NLT)You, too, have given no help. You have seen my calamity, and you are afraid.
Did I ask for your gold? Did I ask for the aid?"
Job 6:22 (NLT)But why? Have I ever asked you for a gift? Have I begged for anything of yours for myself?
"Teach me, and I’ll be quiet... show me where I stray.
Job 6:24 (NLT)Teach me, and I will keep quiet. Show me what I have done wrong.
How forceful are right words... in the middle of the day!
Job 6:25 (NLT)Honest words can be painful, but what do your criticisms amount to?
But what does your arguing... actually prove?
Job 6:25 (NLT)...what do your criticisms amount to?
Is there any taste... in the white of the egg you move?
Job 6:6 (NLT)Don’t people complain about tasteless food? Who wants to eat unsalted meat?
Is there any truth... in the breath you spend?
Job 6:26 (NLT)Do you think your words are convincing when you disregard my cry of despair?

- 1Then Job answered,
- 2“Oh that my anguish were weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances!
- 3For now it would be heavier than the sand of the seas, therefore have my words been rash.
- 4For the arrows of the Almighty are within me. My spirit drinks up their poison. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.
- 5Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?
- 6Can that which has no flavor be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
- 7My soul refuses to touch them. They are as loathsome food to me.
- 8“Oh that I might have my request, that God would grant the thing that I long for,
- 9even that it would please God to crush me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!
- 10Be it still my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn’t spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
- 11What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?
- 12Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of brass?
- 13Isn’t it that I have no help in me, That wisdom is driven quite from me?
- 14“To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
- 15My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;
- 16Which are black by reason of the ice, in which the snow hides itself.
- 17In the dry season, they vanish. When it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
- 18The caravans that travel beside them turn away. They go up into the waste, and perish.
- 19The caravans of Tema looked. The companies of Sheba waited for them.
- 20They were distressed because they were confident. They came there, and were confounded.
- 21For now you are nothing. You see a terror, and are afraid.
- 22Did I say, ‘Give to me?’ or, ‘Offer a present for me from your substance?’
- 23or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary’s hand?’ or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors?’
- 24“Teach me, and I will hold my peace. Cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
- 25How forcible are words of uprightness! But your reproof, what does it reprove?
- 26Do you intend to reprove words, since the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?
- 27Yes, you would even cast lots for the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.
- 28Now therefore be pleased to look at me, for surely I shall not lie to your face.
- 29Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous.
- 30Is there injustice on my tongue? Can’t my taste discern mischievous things?
Is not man forced to labor on earth? Nights of tossing until dawn, flesh clothed with worms, and the first direct address to God in the book: let me alone.
“I loathe my life. I don’t want to live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.”— Job 7:16 (WEB)
"Is there not a set time... for man upon the earth?
Job 7:1 (NLT)Is not all human life a struggle? Our lives are like that of a hired hand...
Like a slave who wants the shade... since the moment of his birth?
Job 7:2 (NLT)Like a slave looking for some shade, like a day laborer waiting to be paid...
I am made to possess... months of vanity and pain.
Job 7:3 (NLT)I, too, have been assigned months of futility...
Wearisome nights... are appointed like the rain.
Job 7:3 (NLT)...long and weary nights of misery.
When I lie down, I say... 'When shall I arise?'
Job 7:4 (NLT)Lying in bed, I think, When will it be morning?
My flesh is clothed with dust... and the worms are in my eyes."
Job 7:5 (NLT)My body is covered with maggots and scabs. My skin breaks open, oozing with pus.
MY DAYS ARE SWIFTER! THAN A WEAVER’S THREAD!
Job 7:6 (NLT)My days fly faster than a weaver’s shuttle.
SPENT WITHOUT THE HOPE! IN THE VALLEY OF THE DEAD!
Job 7:6 (NLT)They end without hope.
OH REMEMBER! THAT MY LIFE IS BUT A WIND!
Job 7:7 (NLT)O God, remember that my life is but a breath...
THE EYE SHALL SEE NO MORE! THE PLACES I HAVE BEEN!
Job 7:7 (NLT)...and I will never again feel happiness.
"I will not curb my mouth... I will speak in my despair.
Job 7:11 (NLT)I cannot keep from speaking. I must express my anguish. My bitter soul must complain.
Am I a sea... or a monster in the air?
Job 7:12 (NLT)Am I a sea monster or a dragon that you must place me under guard?
That You set a watch... over everything I do?
Job 7:12 (NLT)...that you must place me under guard?
When I say my bed shall comfort me... I am terrified by You.
Job 7:13-14 (NLT)I think, My bed will comfort me, and sleep will ease my misery, but then you shatter me with dreams...
You scare me with the dreams... and the visions in the night.
Job 7:14 (NLT)...but then you shatter me with dreams and terrify me with visions.
So that my soul... chooses strangling over light."
Job 7:15 (NLT)I would rather be strangled—rather die than suffer like this.

I know that this is stored within Your place.
Job 10:13 (NLT)...was to watch me, and if I sinned, you would not forgive my guilt.

Job 10:16 (NLT)If I hold my head high, you hunt me like a lion...
And heap Your marvels on my bitter bed.
Job 10:16 (NLT)...and display your awesome power against me.
Why did You bring me from the mother’s womb?
Job 10:18 (NLT)Why, then, did you deliver me from my mother’s womb?

- 3Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile on the counsel of the wicked?
- 4Do you have eyes of flesh? Or do you see as man sees?
- 5Are your days as the days of mortals, or your years as man’s years,
- 6that you inquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin?
- 7Although you know that I am not wicked, there is no one who can deliver out of your hand.

- 9Remember, I beg you, that you have fashioned me as clay. Will you bring me into dust again?
- 10Haven’t you poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese?
- 11You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews.
- 12You have granted me life and loving kindness. Your visitation has preserved my spirit.
- 13Yet you hid these things in your heart. I know that this is with you:

Job 11:3 (NLT)Should I remain silent while you babble on?
And shall no man rebuke you in your pride?
Job 11:3 (NLT)When you mock God, shouldn’t someone make you ashamed?
You say, "My doctrine, it is pure and fair;
Job 11:4 (NLT)You claim, My beliefs are pure...

Job 11:8 (NLT)It is deeper than the underworld—what do you know?
The measure of it stays beyond the land;
Job 11:9 (NLT)It is broader than the earth...
It’s broader than the rolling of the sea.
Job 11:9 (NLT)...and wider than the sea.
If He cuts off, or gathers in His hand...
Job 11:10 (NLT)If God comes and puts a person in prison...
Then who can stay the force of His decree?
Job 11:10 (NLT)...or calls the court to order, who can stop him?
For He knows vain and empty men in full;
Job 11:11 (NLT)For he knows those who are false...
He sees the wicked in the secret place.
Job 11:11 (NLT)...and he takes note of all their sins.
Will He not see the sin and make the pull?
Job 11:11 (NLT)...and he takes note of all their sins.
And hide the light of favor from your face?
Job 11:11 (NLT)...and he takes note of all their sins.
But the eyes of the wicked shall fail... and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost. Job... answer.
Job 11:20 (NLT)But the wicked will be blind to every way of escape. Their only hope is death.

- 1Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered,
- 2“Shouldn’t the multitude of words be answered? Should a man full of talk be justified?
- 3Should your boastings make men hold their peace? When you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?
- 4For you say, ‘My doctrine is pure. I am clean in your eyes.’
- 5But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against you,
- 6that he would show you the secrets of wisdom! For true wisdom has two sides. Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.
- 7“Can you fathom the mystery of God? Or can you probe the limits of the Almighty?
- 8They are high as heaven. What can you do? They are deeper than Sheol. What can you know?
- 9Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
- 10If he passes by, or confines, or convenes a court, then who can oppose him?
- 11For he knows false men. He sees iniquity also, even though he doesn’t consider it.
- 12An empty-headed man becomes wise when a man is born as a wild donkey’s colt.
- 13“If you set your heart aright, stretch out your hands toward him.
- 14If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away. Don’t let unrighteousness dwell in your tents.
- 15Surely then you shall lift up your face without spot; Yes, you shall be steadfast, and shall not fear:
- 16for you shall forget your misery. You shall remember it like waters that have passed away.
- 17Life shall be clearer than the noonday. Though there is darkness, it shall be as the morning.
- 18You shall be secure, because there is hope. Yes, you shall search, and shall take your rest in safety.
- 19Also you shall lie down, and no one shall make you afraid. Yes, many shall court your favor.
- 20But the eyes of the wicked shall fail. They shall have no way to flee. Their hope shall be the giving up of the spirit.”
No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you. Job’s sarcasm at full strength, followed by a hymn to the God who leads counselors away stripped.
““No doubt, but you are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.”— Job 12:2 (WEB)
No doubt but you are the people... and wisdom... it shall surely die with you.
Job 12:2 (NLT)You people really know everything, don’t you? And when you die, wisdom will die with you!
But I have understanding just as you;
Job 12:3 (NLT)Well, I know a few things myself—and you are no better than I am.
I am not lower than your state or mind.
Job 12:3 (NLT)...you are no better than I am.
Who does not know these things you say are true?
Job 12:3 (NLT)Who doesn’t know these things you’ve been saying?
The common truths that any soul can find.
Job 12:3 (NLT)Who doesn’t know these things you’ve been saying?
I am as one who’s mocked by every friend;
Job 12:4 (NLT)Yet my friends laugh at me...
Who calls on God and hears the silent air.
Job 12:4 (NLT)...for I call on God and expect an answer.
The just and upright man meets such an end;
Job 12:4 (NLT)I am a just and blameless man, yet they laugh at me.
While robbers prosper in their secret lair.
Job 12:6 (NLT)But robbers are left in peace...
ASK NOW THE BEASTS! AND THEY SHALL TEACH YOU WELL!
Job 12:7 (NLT)Just ask the animals, and they will teach you.
THE FOWLS OF AIR! SHALL TELL YOU OF THE SKY!
Job 12:7 (NLT)Ask the birds of the sky, and they will tell you.
SPEAK TO THE EARTH! AND HEAR THE TIDINGS SWELL!
Job 12:8 (NLT)Speak to the earth, and it will instruct you.
THE FISH SHALL TELL YOU... HOW THE LIVING DIE!
Job 12:8 (NLT)Let the fish in the sea speak to you.
With Him is wisdom and the mighty strength;
Job 12:13 (NLT)But true wisdom and power are found in God...
He has the counsel and the deep design.
Job 12:13 (NLT)...counsel and understanding are his.
Behold, He breaks a wall through all its length;
Job 12:14 (NLT)What he destroys cannot be rebuilt.
And none can build again the broken line.
Job 12:14 (NLT)What he destroys cannot be rebuilt.
He shuts a man within a darkened room;
Job 12:14 (NLT)When he puts someone in prison...
And there is no releasing from the lock.
Job 12:14 (NLT)...there is no escape.
He sends the waters to a thirsty tomb;
Job 12:15 (NLT)If he holds back the rain, the earth turns to dust.
Or floods the earth and sweeps away the rock.
Job 12:15 (NLT)If he releases the waters, they flood the earth.
He leads the counselors away... spoiled. He makes the judges... fools. Job... understands.
Job 12:17 (NLT)He leads counselors away, stripped of good judgment; he drives judges to madness.

- 1Then Job answered,
- 2“No doubt, but you are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.
- 3But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Yes, who doesn’t know such things as these?
- 4I am like one who is a joke to his neighbor, I, who called on God, and he answered. The just, the blameless man is a joke.
- 5In the thought of him who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune. It is ready for them whose foot slips.
- 6The tents of robbers prosper. Those who provoke God are secure, who carry their God in their hands.
- 7“But ask the animals, now, and they shall teach you; the birds of the sky, and they shall tell you.
- 8Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach you. The fish of the sea shall declare to you.
- 9Who doesn’t know that in all these, Yahweh’s hand has done this,
- 10in whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?
- 11Doesn’t the ear try words, even as the palate tastes its food?
- 12With aged men is wisdom, in length of days understanding.
- 13“With God is wisdom and might. He has counsel and understanding.
- 14Behold, he breaks down, and it can’t be built again. He imprisons a man, and there can be no release.
- 15Behold, he withholds the waters, and they dry up. Again, he sends them out, and they overturn the earth.
- 16With him is strength and wisdom. The deceived and the deceiver are his.
- 17He leads counselors away stripped. He makes judges fools.
- 18He loosens the bond of kings. He binds their waist with a belt.
- 19He leads priests away stripped, and overthrows the mighty.
- 20He removes the speech of those who are trusted, and takes away the understanding of the elders.
- 21He pours contempt on princes, and loosens the belt of the strong.
- 22He uncovers deep things out of darkness, and brings out to light the shadow of death.
- 23He increases the nations, and he destroys them. He enlarges the nations, and he leads them captive.
- 24He takes away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, and causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.
- 25They grope in the dark without light. He makes them stagger like a drunken man.
Though he slay me, yet will I trust him. Act one closes with a man dismissing his friends as forgers of lies and physicians of no value, and requesting a hearing directly.
“Behold, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him.”— Job 13:15 (WEB)
Behold, my eye has seen all of these things;
Job 13:1 (NLT)Look, I have seen all this with my own eyes...
My ear has heard and understood it well.
Job 13:1 (NLT)...and heard it with my own ears.
Whatever knowledge your small wisdom brings,
Job 13:2 (NLT)I know as much as you do.
I know the same; no more have you to tell.
Job 13:2 (NLT)You are no better than I am.
But surely I would speak to Almighty;
Job 13:3 (NLT)As for me, I would speak directly to the Almighty.
And I desire to reason with my God.
Job 13:3 (NLT)I want to argue my case with God himself.
But you are forgers of a lie, I see;
Job 13:4 (NLT)As for you, you smear me with lies.
Physicians of no value on this sod.
Job 13:4 (NLT)As physicians, you are worthless quacks.
OH HOLD YOUR PEACE, AND LET ME HAVE MY SAY!
Job 13:13 (NLT)Be silent now and leave me alone. Let me speak...
AND LET THERE COME ON ME WHATEVER WILL!
Job 13:13 (NLT)...and I will face the consequences.
WHY DO I TAKE MY FLESH IN TEETH TODAY?
Job 13:14 (NLT)Why should I put myself in mortal danger...
AND PUT MY VERY LIFE WITHIN THE KILL?
Job 13:14 (NLT)...and take my life in my own hands?
Though He should slay me, yet I trust Him still;
Job 13:15 (NLT)God might kill me, but I have no other hope.
But I will maintain ways before His face.
Job 13:15 (NLT)I am going to argue my case with him.
He also shall be my salvation’s will;
Job 13:16 (NLT)But this is what will save me—I am not godless.
For no false man shall stand within His grace.
Job 13:16 (NLT)If I were, I could not stand before him.
Withdraw Your hand far from my shattered frame;
Job 13:21 (NLT)Remove your heavy hand from me...
And let Your dread not make me feel afraid.
Job 13:21 (NLT)...and don’t terrify me with your awesome presence.
Then call to me, and I will speak Your name;
Job 13:22 (NLT)Now summon me, and I will answer!
Or let me speak, and hear the plea I’ve made.
Job 13:22 (NLT)Or let me speak to you, and you reply.
How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me to know transgression, and my sin, stands.
Job 13:23 (NLT)Tell me, what have I done wrong? Show me my rebellion and my sin.

- 1“Behold, my eye has seen all this. My ear has heard and understood it.
- 2What you know, I know also. I am not inferior to you.
- 3“Surely I would speak to the Almighty. I desire to reason with God.
- 4But you are forgers of lies. You are all physicians of no value.
- 5Oh that you would be completely silent! Then you would be wise.
- 6Hear now my reasoning. Listen to the pleadings of my lips.
- 7Will you speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for him?
- 8Will you show partiality to him? Will you contend for God?
- 9Is it good that he should search you out? Or as one deceives a man, will you deceive him?
- 10He will surely reprove you, if you secretly show partiality.
- 11Shall not his majesty make you afraid, And his dread fall on you?
- 12Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes, Your defenses are defenses of clay.
- 13“Be silent, leave me alone, that I may speak. Let come on me what will.
- 14Why should I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand?
- 15Behold, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him.
- 16This also shall be my salvation, that a godless man shall not come before him.
- 17Hear diligently my speech. Let my declaration be in your ears.
- 18See now, I have set my cause in order. I know that I am righteous.
- 19Who is he who will contend with me? For then would I hold my peace and give up the spirit.
- 20“Only don’t do two things to me; then I will not hide myself from your face:
- 21withdraw your hand far from me; and don’t let your terror make me afraid.
- 22Then call, and I will answer; or let me speak, and you answer me.
- 23How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me know my disobedience and my sin.
- 24Why hide you your face, and hold me for your enemy?
- 25Will you harass a driven leaf? Will you pursue the dry stubble?
- 26For you write bitter things against me, and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth:
- 27You also put my feet in the stocks, and mark all my paths. You set a bound to the soles of my feet,
- 28though I am decaying like a rotten thing, like a garment that is moth-eaten.
